About FMS

FMS is a thriving, growing educational community. Starting with only a dream and a mission to educate students, in eleven short years we have purchased 54 beautiful acres of land in southern Frederick County, Maryland and built three school buildings.

In the mid-1990's Annette Breiling, FMS' current Head of School, having already started another Quaker school, was determined to build her second. She and a group of committed supporters spent several years looking for appropriate land near Frederick, Maryland.

The dream that was to become Friends Meeting School couldn't wait for them to find the land and build a school house, so FMS was born in rented church space with 13 students in 1997.
buildingfound1 As school opened, 54 acres of rolling farm land in Ijamsville in Southern Frederick County was identified as a potential school site. After much discussion with the owner, veterinarian Betty Schultz, it was agreed that this was to be the site for Friends Meeting School. A master plan was developed for the property, a plan that envisioned sufficient space for up to 1,000 students! Construction of the first building began and students moved into the new space, named Founders Hall, in 1998.
Demand for enrollment soon required the first expansion of the building resulting in the addition of a wing.  About the same time, an adjoining 3-acre parcel came to market and was purchased as a residence for the Head of School, staff, and visitors. Within 5 years, another building, Chelsea Hall, was completed to accommodate a computer lab and a new middle school. The dust had hardly settled on Chelsea's construction when additional needs for the growing school were identified.

newbldg2 After several years of planning, the next phase of construction began in early 2009.  At 21,000 square feet, the new building provides additional classrooms, a dining area, a full-sized gym, a performing arts stage, and offices. It is also home to the new high school - the next chapter in FMS history. Our growth is attributable to a number of factors, but a common theme often emerges -- parents, students, and staff all like the "community" atmosphere of the school. FMS is growing but is not so large that anyone gets lost or overlooked.
