Multiple Intelligences at FMS

verbal Verbal/Linguistic learners enjoy communicating with others through talking and writing.  These folks tend to learn best when they can listen to someone explain a concept, repeat the idea to a peer or teacher, discuss steps in an equation or experiment, and debate about literature and history.  Writing is fun for this type of learner and they tend to be strong notetakers.
mathmatical Logical/Mathematical learners have fun using numbers and statistics to understand the world around them and what is being taught.  Reasoning and finding patterns within scientific and social research and data are interesting to this type of learner.  Math is usually a favorite topic of study when they can perform complex calculations and arrive at sound answers.
visual Visual/Spatial learners like to wrap their brains around puzzles of a visual nature.  Manipulating numbers, shapes, and making mental pictures are at least three of the ways that these folks learn.  Graphic organizers, charts, pictures, diagrams, webs are all useful when teaching this sort of learner and when this sort of learner teaches others.
kinesthetic Bodily/Kinesthetic learners use their muscles to memorize information, strategies, and patterns in math and science.  They like manipulating actual objects as they learn - using base ten blocks and geometric shapes in math, conducting experiments in science, playing kickball to learn vocabulary, and developing clapping patterns to learn a timeline in history are all examples of effective teaching and learning strategies with this type of learner.
musical Musical learners sometimes have musical skills and sometimes they don't, but they will always respond to lessons that incorporate pitch, rhythm, tone and musical patterns. Strong auditory skills can lead to learning through lecture, especially when songs and rhythms are used to teach mathematics, grammar, steps to the scientific method, and important dates in history or geography.
interpersonal Interpersonal learners enjoy learning with others in small and large groups.  If given a leadership role during learning activities, one is almost guaranteed to see results.  Dividing tasks, understanding strengths and weaknesses, encouraging the team, and making learning personal is the approach to take with this type of learner.
intrapersonal Intrapersonal learners will respond best to information of any kind when given time to closely examine it, perhaps talk it over with one or two other folks, and then work alone for a period of time before proceeding to another level of learning.  Journaling, pair-shares, and small groups enable this reflective learner to thrive.
naturalist Naturalist learners are social scientists at heart.  They enjoy observing how systems, be they on the city streets or in the local forest, function.  They respond to any learning situation where they are given the freedom to explore before being given possible answers, trying to connect what they already know with the new information being presented.
